:iconmadmortician: and I noticed our kitty Ichabod was acting really strange, really lethargic and hiding, not eating, not bugging us and up in our face/laps, being bad or mischievous as he normally was.
We noticed a bit on Sunday, and thought he was just having a bad day, maybe a kitty cold or something. So we kept an eye on Monday – and when we saw how awful he looked, greasy fur, inattentive, lost a lot of weight, sunken in sides, dead eyes – we knew he had to go to the vet. :iconmadmortician: took the day off work the next day and :iconravenmaven: took them to the vets, for over 2 hours.
He had tests, blood work, and the usual stuff as well. He didn't have the common kitty diseases, and he didn't have feline leukemia either.
But $260 later we found out that he had severe anemia. You'd think that it doesn't seem that bad, but when it comes to the severity that he has it, not to mention some strange blood virus that acts like Feline Leukemia, it IS really serious.
The bare minimum for the red blood cell count is 26%, he was at 10%.
I guess there is something that is on his red blood cells, and it's causing his immune system to attack this, which in turn is killing his red blood cells and they are barely regenerating (the tests found some signs of regenerative cells). Essentially his immune system is killing him.
He was prescribed some meds that we picked up that night, the first part of the meds anyway and were told to start immediately that night. These are to shut down his immune system, to stop the attack on his cells and let them regenerate. The others are to stop the infection, or maybe to boost regeneration.. not terrible sure actually. We quarantined him to the bedroom with his own food and water so the other animals wouldn't bug him and he wouldn't have to hide away from us.
This in itself was hard, if you know Ichabod you know that he's a little whore for attention and is always out all over us wanting to be loved.
We checked on him periodically to find him just in the same spot, not moving, not doing anything. Barely responding to his name (and again, if you know Ichabod – he really does know his name, he could be down the hall and you call his name and he comes running), terribly laborous breathing. Just a ragdoll of skin and bones.
He stayed in with us that night, had a little pee on the floor – but Wednesday my mom dropped over his own little litter box. He was still eating and drinking a bit. We had to start him off, but then he'd get going and eat, or eat off of our hands and stuff. So it was good that he was showing signs of being hungry, and eating, and drinking. Though not nearly as much as normal. But it made me happy to see him using the litter box, or when I heard him eating or drinking. AND he still groomed himself, which is always a good sign. One night he slept on my back the whole time, as well as slept with me on the couch. So going on a constant regiment of pills every twelve hours, syringing water down his throat and doing this all the time for his dehydration which wasn't going away, he wasn't getting any better. We picked up his second set of meds on Saturday which we started that evening. We noticed by then that he wasn't eating much, less than just the previous week. We got him special stuff from the vet, that promotes weight gain and his high in calories. He ate some for the first day or so, and now he doesn't eat fuck all.
Sunday still no improvement. Yesterday, the worst of all.
We started mixing his new food with water and having to syringe that into him to force him to eat. Because it had gotten that bad. He hates us for it, he hates taking 4 pills a day, he hates being forced to drink the water, eat the food. It's like feeding an old man, or a baby who spits it all out because he doesn't want any of it. And where has no energy whatsoever, it take so much out of him to fight us on this and it really sucks.
Last night he spent a lot of the night with :iconmadmortician: and I taking turns having him on our laps. We've been taking pics and vids, but it sucks because he looks so horrific lately. No weight gain, no livening up. Last week at least he'd get spurts of wanting attention, or knowing his name. And now just nothing at all.
Then to top it all off, last night during his feeding session, he was so upset about it that he peed all over me. He totally lost control of his bladder, he has no energy to even hold it, or try to use the litter box. That just did me in. Then again this morning when giving his meds, he peed. I'm at my wits end, I want to rip out my hair, I feel useless, there is nothing I can do, we're doing all we can. And this fucking sucks!
:iconmadmortician: called the vet again today, asked about his uncontrollable peeing (normal in the state he is in) and that we are doing all we can, the meds, the feeding/watering. There's not much we can do about it. We have to bring him back to the vets for a follow up blood test to see if the meds are doing any good for him, if his blood count is higher – though the docs said it sounds like he's not getting better, but worse instead.
:iconmadmortician: started to ask when to bring him in for the follow up, and the vet said 'to call it?'
NO, not yet. But by the sounds of it, most kitties do not survive this, and when we get the tests back and if there is no improvement then we have to make the decision to let him go. And I don't know if I can do that though I know it has to be done.

Mr. Ich by BloodyBlackCat

I'm still willing for him to get better, with all of my heart.
Please think of him for me.
Those who don't have pets, or haven't lost a pet won't quite understand that losing one, IS losing a part of your family, a part of your everyday life and is taking a piece of your heart with them.

I'm not mourning him right now, I'm loving him as much as possible

Thank you so much :iconlyastri:

Hey, I was browsing dA, and I stumbled upon you here.
I lost a cat to cancer last summer, and it still hurts. I really hope your cat gets better, adn that he gets to live a long and happy life. It hurts so much to lose a family member, and I really hope you won't have to.
Best wishes to you and your Ichabod.
